Priya Art Gallery of Woodbury NJ to feature
nationally known Chicana artist Marta Sanchez

April 24, 2013–Woodbury NJ–Priya Aart Gallery opens an exciting new exhibit on May 3rd, 2013 and will feature nationally known Chicana artist Marta Sanchez.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, painter Marta Sanchez is deeply inspired by traditional Mexican folk art expressions. Sanchez is recognized primarily for her retablo paintings, as well as exciting works inspired by the vibrant world around her. These soulful works on metal capture the deepest held wishes and dreams of her subjects, as if the artist were lighting a candle in prayer for them.

Working and living in the Philadelphia area since the mid eighties, Marta recently moved her studio to the Frankford section of Philadelphia and is excited to begin working in this vital, reenergized neighborhood. Marta is an active working artist and educator whose work is widely exhibited througouht the country. Her works are in the permanent collection of the The Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as the private collection of Cheech Marin, actor, director and art collector. Marin’s collection of Chicano art is considered to be the finest collection of Chicano art in the United States.

Marta’s works are included in the current traveling show: Chicanitas: Small paintings from the Cheech Marin collection {size doesn’t matter} of small works. This tour includes eight stops across the country with Cheech Marin speaking about collecting.

The Priya show opens on Friday May 3rd, with artist reception on Saturday, May 4th from 6-8:00 pm. A preview and artist talk with Marta will be from 5:30 to 6:00 on Saturday.

The show will also present Priya Member Artist’s works in all mediums. Priya Member Artists are professional artists who support the gallery with time, commitment and creative spirit.
